Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and are relaxed, refreshed, and ready to start a new year.
If you are reading many of the end-of-year posts and blogs, as I have been doing, I know you’re seeing a lot of advice about goal setting. A new year is a great time to set new goals and update your old ones.
But before you finalize that list, I’d like to consider one more thing.
A thing that’s not really a goal.
Space.
Yes, space.
We often set challenging goals for ourselves and our families, which is not a bad thing. But the goals can be consuming and time-consuming. We schedule ourselves to take advantage of every opportunity to achieve our goals.
Which is great… BUT.
That intense focus on specific goals can blind us to the unexpected opportunities that might be even better than what we planned.
That’s why it’s so important to leave room for the unexpected. Or even better, make room for the unexpected.
In 2025, I decided to focus more on my writing and my local community and leave more room for the unknown. And I did.
That’s where the magic happened. Because I made space in my life by cutting back on some things, I had room to say yes when another — unexpected and very welcome — opportunity came along.
If all my “space” had been filled, I might not have had the room to say “yes”.
All too often, we miss or dismiss new opportunities because we’re too busy, they don’t fit with our “goals”, or we don’t even see them. Yet, they might just be something that fulfills our goals and needs in a different, better way.
So, while you’re preparing your plan for 2026, leave a little space, a little give, so that you have the time and freedom to see something new, something unexpected.
Even if you don’t, you have more time to breathe and dream and create. And that’s not a bad thing either.

Oh… and one more thing, don’t forget to leave room on your calendar to read my new book Embracing Trust. It comes out on February 24th. The early reviews are starting to come in… and I’m happy to share that they are awesome. Stay tuned!
